How do you MAKE a Bean Bag Chair?

Bean bag chairs need to be stuffed with something that won’t collapse under the weight of the average person. Feathers, while soft, can’t support weight for very long and will collapse. Bean bag chairs should be studded with the proper polystyrene “beans” that are designed to hold up to the wear and tear of everyday use. Packing peanuts are too large and can’t be stuffed in firm enough. Their shape leaves too mush empty air space, While this is good for packing, it isn’t good for a chair to sit on. There are a couple alternative fillers for bean bag chairs, unfortunately they can be quite expensive. Kapok, a vegetable source fiber similar to cotton can be used, but it’s expensive. Buckwheat hulls also work, these are quite comfortable, support the body and contour to the shape sitting upon the chair. Filling a chair will be expensive. Buckwheat hulls are used in those microwavable and freezable therapeutic pillows. The best and most economical is all ways is still the traditional polystyrene beans. You also should remember that anything used in furniture should be fire retardant, and neither kapok nor feathers meet furniture standards for fire retardant quality.
There are tons of free patterns available on line. Use one of them, follow the instructions and you will soon have a great little, or big, bean bag chair. Bean bag chairs are easy to sew, easy to make and lots of fun to have around.
