What was the purpose of the “fence” around the bed in the Queen’s bedroom in Versailles?
Was that for privacy reasons?
To keep the courtiers away from touching range.
To keep them away when she wanted a private discussion with someone, who would be invited inside the fence. Bedrooms were not private rooms and you received people in your bedroom without turning a hair, you could even receive people while staying in your bed if they were close enough, friends, family… or of such a lower rank that you didn’t have to make the effort to get up.
To mark a difference in rank as only the very high nobles had the right to stay inside the fence as a rule.
